Fans of California’s unmistakably easygoing aesthetic will no doubt have come across stylist Kate Brien’s work. From Jenni Kayne to Christy Dawn and styling stints at Vogue magazine in between (not to mention the widely popular View from the Topp blog that had a bird’s eye view of chic footwear trending for a good year or so on Instagram), her boho-chic sensibility makes the case for those with unwavering wanderlust. We chat with the image-maker on morning rituals and travel inspirations.

Tell us about yourself.

I was born in New York City and grew up in Santa Monica, California. I moved back to New York to go to NYU for college, where I studied Visual Culture and The Psyche, delving into ideas about our unconscious and how it speaks through art and the image.  After I graduated, I studied fashion design at Parsons and then worked under a fashion editor at Vogue, which lead me to my career in styling, content creation, creative consulting, and art direction.

I currently live in Venice, California with my husband, David and our puppy, Zoey.  And we’re expecting a baby boy this August!

“I love surrounding myself with people who have different interests and fields of work, who can teach me new things.  I have a very holistic approach to my job and life in general, and I am always finding inspiration from all different areas. Another huge inspiration for me is travel – my husband and I try to get out of Los Angeles as often as we can.”

What inspires your work?

My friends are a huge inspiration for me.  I love surrounding myself with people who have different interests and fields of work, who can teach me new things.  I have a very holistic approach to my job and life in general, and I am always finding inspiration from all different areas.

Another huge inspiration for me is travel – my husband and I try to get out of Los Angeles as often as we can. Seeing new things and exploring and learning about different cultures gives me so much perspective which always finds its way into my work.

Do you have a morning ritual you can share with us?

I’ve always been a morning person, it’s the time when I feel most in tune with myself and before all of the stresses of the day have really hit. I usually wake up early and meditate and try to move my body, if possible. For me that means yoga, Pilates or hiking or even just taking our dog for a long walk through our neighborhood.  It really lifts my mood and wakes me up for the day. And I always, always shower in the morning.

Morning walks, meditation, and yoga to start the day on the right note.

Are there things you look for in particular in your beauty products or brands you support?

I try to only use natural and organic products with no sulfates, parabens or fragrance added, especially now that I’m pregnant.  I love True Botanicals, Osea and Bathing Culture body wash.

What do you do on days when you need to unwind or unplug?

When I need to unwind I love spending time in nature.  I head to the beach whenever I possibly can, or go for a hike or a sunset walk.  The outdoors bring me peace.

Where are your favorite travel destinations?

Tulum, Japan, Kauai and Big Sur, California.
