Trained as a classical pianist since childhood, Los Angeles-based musician Aska Matsumiya launched her music career in her teens when she joined the act, Your Enemies Friends and began touring in the United States. Since then, she has performed around the world and has recorded and released works in collaboration with other artists like Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, filmmaker Spike Jonez and produced music for brands like Chanel, Hermes, Miu Miu, among others. We met up with the music producer during one of her routine trips to Tokyo (where she founded her own music production company Black Cat White Cat with brother Seiya) and took some notes on her go-to spots in L.A.

In 2010, Aska wrote the music for “There Are Many of Us” for Spike Jonze’s film I’m Here.Apart from being a recording artist, Aska is also a film composer, writing for films such as the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning The Wolfpack and the Venice Biennale Japanese film Blanka.
